Cook the Books

A new library program, Cook the Books, is debuting on June 20.  We’re really excited to begin this new initiative, as it’s a completely different take on what you might typically expect from a book club.  For starters, there’s food involved! Who doesn’t love a potluck? Or at least a sample of fantastic recipes? Gordon Ramsay, Whole30, Rachael Ray, Paleo bowls, Jamie Oliver… these are just a few of the popular cookbook trends on our shelves.  We have quite the selection, following through several years of popular cooking styles. Of course, healthy seems to be the name of the game at the moment, but taste and enjoyment are also top on our list of considerations in choosing the club’s feature cookbook.

So, to sign up, come into the library, pick a recipe out of the cookbook and photocopy it.  Take it home and bring the dish in for the book club meeting. On the day of the meeting, you can expect to sample several other recipes, share a little about your recipe (why you chose it, what you liked about it, what you would change next time, etc.), and hear from others as well.  It will be a fairly simple, but guided discussion. Sometimes, we may have a demonstration from one of our local home chefs. Mostly, we’ll get to just enjoy the food and meet other foodies!

We’re hoping there’s a variety of dishes from different courses, but it’s completely up to each individual.  The whole purpose is to get to know our cookbooks a little better in way less time and with way less work!

The first book we’ve chosen is called Flavor!  It’s the latest title from Forks Over Knives. The synopsis on the back cover is as follows:

Good Health Tastes So Good

The culinary innovators at Forks Over Knives show you how to take your whole-food kitchen to the next level, adding international flair to every meal.  Chef Darshana Thacker has created delicious and easy-to-prepare riffs on favorite ethnic traditions from around the globe, featuring heady spice blends and a wide variety of plant-based ingredients.

Remember, you’ll need to come into the library to sign up and choose your recipe.  Then, the meeting is on June 20 at 6:00 pm. Come join us for this fun take on a new book club.  We can’t wait to taste your recipe!
