Novel Idea Book Club with Jayne

The Invermere Public Library has been hosting Novel Idea, a community book club every month for over a year now.  It has been run by a few different staff members and continues to offer a riveting and multi-faceted conversation, enjoyed by a variety of community members.

Jayne, our staff member who is currently in charge of the club shares, “the best thing about book club is the eclectic people and views that bring a whole new meaning to each book.  So although the title might not always be your first choice, you learn how to appreciate the book from someone else’s point of view.” Our group members have come with their own contributions to the conversation, and everyone leaves with several different perspectives that they hadn’t already thought of.  Sometimes emotional topics arise, which can strike a chord with the group and pull on our heartstrings. This was especially true with one of the club’s latest reads, Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson.  With themes of humor and blunt honesty, tackling the intimidating world of personal growth through anxiety, depression, and a host of other mental and physical health challenges, every person related differently.  The writing took some time to get used to, but when viewed through the lens of someone who has struggled in similar ways, it can be very refreshing to read about another person’s journey.

Other recent Novel Ideal picks have included the following titles:

December – Holidays on Ice – by David Sedaris

January – Vinegar Girl – by Anne Tyler

February – City of Thieves by David Benioff

March 2019 – The Wonder by Emma Donoghue

April 2019 – Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

May 2019 – Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier

The library book club strives to cover a variety of genres, in order to challenge our community to read something that they wouldn’t normally pick up off the shelf on their own.  Even if a person is unable to attend a meeting, our book club picks are often inspirational for your next “out of the usual” read.

Visit us to pick up the book and sign up for one of our next meetings on Wednesday, June 19 at 6:30 pm or Friday, June 21 at 2:00 pm.  June’s book club will discuss Little Bee by Chris Cleave.  We would love for you to join us!
